Assistant Professor
About Me
I am an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University and Co-Director of the Persuasive Computing Lab. I obtained my PhD and MSc degrees in Computer Science from Dalhousie University and Western University, Canada, respectively. My research examines how AI-enabled systems can sense, interpret, adapt to, and support human needs while remaining understandable, trustworthy, controllable, inclusive, and safe, with applications in domains such as health, education, safety, environmental sustainability, and accessibility.
My work has been published in high-impact journals and major conferences, and my research program and trainees are supported by NSERC, CIHR, Mitacs, the Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI), Canada Impact+ Research Training Award (CIRTA), and the Google PhD Fellowship. I serve on the editorial boards of leading journals, and I bring more than a decade of technology industry experience, including senior leadership roles as Head of Innovation and Emerging Trends and Head of Data Science and Architecture.
Feel free to reach out to me to discuss research and industry collaborations in areas of common interests :)
My research intersects Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Multimodal and Adaptive Systems, Persuasive Systems, and Human-Centred Intelligent Technologies. I examine how AI-enabled systems can sense, interpret, adapt to, and support human needs, states, behaviours, goals, and context while remaining understandable, trustworthy, controllable, inclusive, and safe. Recent work spans human-AI collaboration, haptic interaction, wearable and multisensing systems, eye-gaze and gesture interaction, augmented/virtual/mixed reality, human activity recognition, context-aware systems, AI-assisted robotic interaction, and personalized and adaptive systems. Applications span public and social good, including health and well-being, education and learning, safety and security, environmental sustainability, and mobility and accessibility. My work combines user-centred, participatory, and co-design approaches with machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), large language models (LLMs), generative and agentic AI, multimodal AI, and software and cloud systems, while encompassing mixed-methods empirical evaluation, conceptual research, and evidence synthesis.
My research has been published in high-impact international journals and major conferences spanning AI, HCI, intelligent interactive systems, digital health, and persuasive technology. Several of my research projects have also led to award-winning and award-nominated publications and attracted media attention for their scientific and societal relevance. I collaborate with researchers, industry partners, and community organizations within Canada and internationally. My research program and trainees have secured substantial competitive research and training support through major national and international programs, including NSERC, CIHR, Mitacs, the Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI), Canada Impact+ Research Training Award (CIRTA), and the Google PhD Fellowship.
I also contribute to the international research community through editorial leadership, conference organization, peer review, and research-grant review. I serve as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence, Topic Editor for Frontiers in Robotics and AI, Editorial Board Member for Discover Artificial Intelligence, Guest Editor for MDPI Healthcare, and Review Board Member for the ACM Journal on Computing and Sustainable Societies. I have also served as an Associate Chair for ACM CHI, co-chaired the international workshops, chaired international conference sessions, served on program committees, and reviewed research proposals for organizations including NSERC, Mitacs, and the Ocean Frontier Institute. My work also extends beyond academia through research translation, industry partnerships, and community leadership. I lead and contribute to collaborations that bring AI and interactive technologies into real-world settings, including work with Engage Nova Scotia, the Eastern Shore Citizen Science Coastal Monitoring Network, and industry partners. I serve on the Board of Directors of Imhotep's Legacy Academy (ILA) and as a Coding/FLL Program Advisor and Evaluator, contributing to curriculum development, program quality, and equitable pathways into computing and STEM for African Nova Scotian youth.
Before entering academia full-time, I spent more than a decade in the technology industry working across software engineering, enterprise systems and integration, data science and architecture, artificial intelligence and machine learning, analytics, cloud technologies, and digital innovation. My work ranged from building enterprise and customer-facing systems, data platforms, AI-enabled services, and analytics solutions to leading multidisciplinary technology teams and organization-wide innovation initiatives. I held senior leadership positions including Head of Innovation and Emerging Trends and Head of Data Science and Architecture.
